<sigh>
No, you haven't read wrong, the civic is gone. A
horrible accident took the life of the civic, and nearly took mine
along with it. Fortunately, I made it out with only a large number
of bruises and nearly 50 stitches in my ear.
How did it happen?
While coming home from my brother's house, I rounded
the last turn before my house, probably no faster than I had ever
taken it before. I did two things wrong, I snapped the steering
wheel and let off the throttle at the same time. Those that know
cars understand this as lift throttle oversteer. Anyway, I started
to slide sideways. I came across the road, took out a mailbox and
went into a ditch...the first big gouge in the dirt...then I slid
sideways into a pole. Those two tire marks are not the left and
right tires, but front and rear tires. I hit the pole with the right
side and caught air. At this point, I believe that the car flipped
end over end before it hit the ground in between two trees. After
it hit the ground, it looks like I flipped over the driveway and
finally stopped against the last tree. The car was on it's
passenger side. I was able to crawl out of the broken moon roof.
I've learned that you can't drive aggressively all
the time and not end up in the situation that I just experienced.
Even though I've been down this very road time and time again,
conditions can change as they did. It was damp from the cold night
air and I didn't realize it. I nearly paid for the mistake with my
life.
One other thing that came out of this experience is
an even greater respect for seatbelts. Through the entire
experience, I felt pounding on my left side. I realized later that
it was the belt fighting to keep me in my seat. I'm bruised very
badly from the belt. However, I'll take bruises and sore muscles
over being paralyzed or dead any day. I would have been ejected had
I not worn my belt. So, if I ever catch you not wearing a belt, be
prepared for me to jump down your throat!
Since many will ask, "What are you going to do now,"
I'll say this: I need to take some time and count my blessings. I
plan to find another civic and start over. I loved my civic too
much to give up on civics all together
I believe that God was, and is on my side. Without
Him, I wouldn't be here to write this page. It's strange that it
takes an event of this magnitude to realize how much a person
impacts everyone's life. A great example of this point is, "It's a
Wonderful Life". I've been overwhelmed by the responses from
family, friends, and even unknown people that have stumbled upon
these pictures.
In closing I want to thank everyone for the support and love that
I've gotten since the accident. It means more to me than anyone can
imagine.
Drive Carefully!
